CSIA & NFI certified chimney service for Southside Greenville's 1940s–1960s brick homes. Gas log conversions in original masonry fireplaces are common here — and most were installed without a liner assessment that NFPA 211 requires.
Southside Greenville encompasses the residential neighborhoods south of downtown — from the blocks immediately south of the Reedy River up through the Augusta Road south corridor toward Mauldin. Construction in this zone spans from the early 1940s to the 1970s, with the oldest and densest concentration of pre-war and immediate post-war housing stock in the city.
The southern stretch of Augusta Road and the streets running off it contain Greenville's densest concentration of 1940s–1950s brick cottages and bungalows. Many of these homes were built with fireplaces as the primary or supplemental heat source — before central heat was standard. These original fireplaces now contain gas log sets installed by various owners over the decades. The combination of a 70–80 year old clay tile liner and a gas appliance installed without a liner inspection is the single most common chimney safety situation we encounter on the Southside.
The neighborhoods along West Faris Road and the South Pleasantburg corridor include 1950s–1960s ranch homes that represent a slightly later phase of Southside development. These properties have single-flue masonry chimneys with the original clay tile liner intact. A portion of these homes still have functional wood-burning fireplaces used seasonally — they require annual masonry sweep and creosote stage assessment. Others have converted to gas logs and need the liner condition verified before continued use.
Moving south along Mauldin Road toward the county boundary, the housing stock transitions from original post-war construction to 1970s development — slightly larger ranches and traditional two-stories. The 1970s homes in this zone often have original wood-burning masonry fireplaces that were never converted, and many show decades of deferred maintenance: corroded cast iron dampers, open chimney crowns, and accumulated creosote from wood burning without documented service.
Southside Greenville's proximity to downtown has made it one of Greenville's most active renovation markets. Renovated properties frequently feature preserved original fireplaces as a selling point — the original brick surround and mantel are attractive design elements. What buyers sometimes learn after closing is that the original fireplace's interior — flue liner, damper, and crown — was not part of the renovation scope. We encounter these situations regularly and provide the liner assessment and service that brings the system up to a documentable standard.
Whether your Southside home has an original wood-burning masonry fireplace, a gas log set installed in original masonry, or a more recent gas fireplace — all three require different expertise and we carry all three certifications.
NFI Gas Specialist assessment of gas log sets installed in original masonry fireplaces. Liner condition check, flue sizing evaluation, damper configuration verification, and gas supply inspection — the steps that were skipped when the logs were originally installed.

View serviceFull flue camera inspection for Southside homes with 70–80 year old clay tile liners. Identifies cracked tiles, open mortar joints, and deteriorated liner sections invisible from the firebox opening. Essential for any home with a gas log set in an original masonry fireplace.
View serviceStainless top-mount damper installation to replace corroded or seized cast iron dampers. Crown resurfacing to seal open cracks that allow rainwater into the flue. Both are among the most cost-effective repairs available for aging Southside masonry chimney systems.
View serviceStainless steel flex liner installation for Southside chimneys with cracked or deteriorated clay tile. When the original liner can no longer safely contain combustion gases, relining restores full containment — and makes an existing gas log installation code-compliant.
View serviceProfessional dryer vent cleaning for all Southside Greenville homes. Older construction with laundry areas added post-original build often has improvised vent routing. We clear the full run from dryer connection to exterior termination and test airflow at completion.
